چکیده

form (McCracken & Barr, 1982, 1983; Barr & McCracken, 1983; Barr et al. 1983) it is probably appropriate to point out that we have confirmed the variability of nutrient intake by young cafeteria-fed animals and the complex dietary deficiencies which c v arise. Regretfully, we have been unable to find convincing evidence for the presence of the elusive DIT phenomenon in any of our experiments although we have demonstrated marginal improvements in nitrogen and energy utilization in response to mineral/vitamin enrichment. It is obviously of more than academic interest that we should attempt to bring this unfortunate controversy to a satisfactory conclusion. We appeal to all those using cafeteria feeding or other similar methods of inducing hyperphagia to attempt to define all the experimental variables and to keep an open mind about the existence of experimental artefacts which could be responsible for the differences reported. Diet induced thermogenesis

OBJECTIVE: Daily energy expenditure consists of three components: basal metabolic rate, diet-induced thermogenesis and the energy cost of physical activity. Here, data on diet-induced thermogenesis are reviewed in relation to measuring conditions and characteristics of the diet. METHODS: Measuring conditions include nutritional status of the subject, physical activity and duration of the observ...

Effect of diet and exercise on norepinephrine-induced thermogenesis in male and female rats.

Male and female rats were fed standard laboratory chow or a highly palatable diet (cafeteria diet) for 10 wk. The cafeteria diet caused an increase in caloric intake and in body weight, and it induced thermogenesis that was associated with elevated plasma triiodothyronine (T3) levels, increased brown adipose tissue size, and enhanced metabolic response to norepinephrine. For a comparable calori...

NT-PGC-1α Activation Attenuates High-Fat Diet–Induced Obesity by Enhancing Brown Fat Thermogenesis and Adipose Tissue Oxidative Metabolism

The transcriptional coactivator peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator (PGC)-1α and its splice variant N terminal (NT)-PGC-1α regulate adaptive thermogenesis by transcriptional induction of thermogenic and mitochondrial genes involved in energy metabolism. We previously reported that full-length PGC-1α (FL-PGC-1α) is dispensable for cold-induced nonshivering thermogenesis in F...

Lipocalin-2 Deficiency Impairs Thermogenesis and Potentiates Diet-Induced Insulin Resistance in Mice

OBJECTIVE Lipocalin (LCN) 2 belongs to the lipocalin subfamily of low-molecular mass-secreted proteins that bind small hydrophobic molecules. LCN2 has been recently characterized as an adipose-derived cytokine, and its expression is upregulated in adipose tissue in genetically obese rodents. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of LCN2 in diet-induced insulin resistance and m...

Effects of epigallocatechin-3-gallate on thermogenesis and mitochondrial biogenesis in brown adipose tissues of diet-induced obese mice

Background: Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the major polyphenol in green tea and has been considered a natural agent that can help to reduce the risk of obesity. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of EGCG on thermogenesis and mitochondrial biogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT) of diet-induced obese mice. Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice were provided a high-fat ...

Thrifty metabolism that favors fat storage after caloric restriction: a role for skeletal muscle phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase activity and AMP-activated protein kinase.

Energy conservation directed at accelerating body fat recovery (or catch-up fat) contributes to obesity relapse after slimming and to excess fat gain during catch-up growth after malnutrition. To investigate the mechanisms underlying such thrifty metabolism for catch-up fat, we tested whether during refeeding after caloric restriction rats exhibiting catch-up fat driven by suppressed thermogene...
